Travel agent marketing training session in 2026

Some Travel Agents Are Marketing Themselves Differently

And Clients Are Responding.

Recently, I ran a training session about travel agent marketing for a group of brand new home-based travel agents and something fascinating happened throughout the day. On the surface, the session focused on positioning, branding and digital marketing. But underneath all of those conversations was a much bigger realisation quietly unfolding.

Some travel agents are approaching marketing very differently now. And clients are responding.

Because while many travel professionals are still trying to become more visible online, the agents growing stronger businesses are focusing on something else first: clarity. They are becoming clearer about who they help, what they specialise in and why clients should choose them. And honestly, that distinction changes everything.

Travel Marketing Has Changed Because Client Behaviour Has Changed

For years, travel marketing was largely built around visibility. Post more. Promote more. Stay active online. Keep your business in front of people. But modern clients search differently now. They are no longer simply looking for “a travel agent.” They are searching for someone who feels aligned with the exact type of experience they want.

That shift is reshaping the industry faster than many people realise.

Years ago, somebody might have typed “travel agent near me” into Google. Today, people are asking much more specific questions. They are searching for the best travel agent for luxury rail journeys, or a travel agent who specialises in food and wine travel through Italy, or who understands off-the-beaten-track travel experiences. Search behaviour has become conversational, emotional and highly specific.

And the travel agents standing out online are not necessarily the loudest. They are the easiest to understand.

The Clearest Travel Agents Are Becoming the Most Memorable

One of the strongest conversations throughout the training centred around the idea that generalists compete on price while specialists compete on value. That sentence alone shifted something because so many home-based travel agents unintentionally market themselves as being able to do everything for everyone. Europe, cruises, family holidays, wellness escapes, luxury travel, groups and corporate travel all end up sitting under the same umbrella.

But broader messaging often creates the opposite of what businesses intend. Instead of attracting more people, it creates confusion.

As Donald Miller explains in Building a StoryBrand, “If you confuse, you lose.”

That quote became one of the defining themes throughout the day because many travel agents are not struggling from a lack of effort. They are struggling from a lack of clarity. They are posting consistently, trying different platforms and staying busy online, but their marketing still feels disconnected because they have not clearly defined what they want to become known for.

Recently I caught up with a travel agent from Sydney whose positioning shifted in a really powerful way. What originally started as simply “helping people book unique holidays” evolved into helping travellers move beyond crowded ship experiences and into more immersive, curated small ship adventures that feel personal, inspiring and deeply memorable.

But the real shift was not just in the wording. It came from understanding why she loved this style of travel so much in the first place.

Throughout her career, small ship cruising had always been the travel experience she felt most connected to. She loved the intimacy of it, the slower pace, the meaningful conversations, the sense of discovery and the kind of travellers it naturally attracted. These were her people. Curious travellers wanting something deeper than simply ticking destinations off a list. And the moment she started marketing herself and her business around that passion, everything changed.

This experience instantly reminded me of the work of Simon Sinek and his famous concept of “Start With Why” from the book Start With Why. Simon explains that people are far more connected to why you do something than simply what you sell.

That was exactly what happened here. She stopped ‘marketing holidays’ for marketing sake and started to ‘market’ to her ideal client. She started communicating belief, passion and purpose.

Suddenly the business felt completely different. Not louder and not more polished, just a lot clearer. And marketing became simple for her.

Another travel agent refined his business around helping travellers explore the world’s most extraordinary natural wonders through seamless, expertly curated journeys. Without ever needing to use the word “luxury,” the business immediately felt more premium and specialised.

That was a powerful moment because it reinforced something many travel agents misunderstand about branding. Premium positioning does not come from expensive logos or polished aesthetics alone. More often, it comes from clarity, specificity and expertise communicated confidently.

Clients Are Choosing Travel Agents Based on Trust

One of the most important conversations from the session focused on the reality that clients are often watching long before they are buying. Most people do not discover a travel agent online and immediately enquire. Instead, they quietly observe. They scroll through profiles, read comments, notice consistency, look at testimonials and slowly form impressions over time.

Before somebody contacts you, they are subconsciously asking themselves:
“Does this person feel trustworthy?”
“Do they understand this type of travel?”
“Do I feel confident handing my holiday and money over to them?”

That is why your digital presence matters so much now. Because your website, social media profiles, newsletters, reviews and even the way you communicate via email all contribute to the same story. Everything communicates something.

During the session, we discussed how clients are unconsciously scanning for professionalism, expertise, personality, consistency and proof before they ever make contact. And perhaps this is one of the biggest mindset shifts for modern travel agents to understand: people are not simply buying travel anymore. They are buying reassurance.

The Smartest Travel Agents Are Creating Content Differently

Many home-based travel agents feel enormous pressure around social media. They believe they need to constantly create polished content, master every platform and somehow become an influencer overnight. But one of the strongest shifts during the training was understanding that consistency matters far more than perfection.

The best travel content often sounds less like advertising and more like useful advice shared over a cup of coffee.

A simple post about ‘when to avoid visiting Japan’, ‘mistakes people make booking flights to Europe too late’ or ‘what travellers should never do in New Zealand’ often builds more trust than a polished sales graphic.

Why? Because expertise creates confidence. And confidence creates enquiries.

We spent time discussing the five content pillars that help travel agents build authority online: destination expertise, travel tips, personal insights, client experiences and behind the scenes moments. The framework immediately simplified content creation for many of the agents; becoming useful, recognisable and trustworthy consistently will win the race.

If you’d like a PDF copy of the 5 Content Pillars framework, send me a quick email and I’ll happily send it through. It’s a simple one page poster that instantly helps simplify travel marketing and content creation.

AI Is Changing Which Travel Agents Get Found Online

Another major part of the training focused on AI and discoverability. And honestly, this was the section many people initially felt nervous about. There is so much conversation around AI right now that many travel professionals already feel behind before they even begin.

But one of the biggest takeaways from the session was this: the goal is not mastering technology. The goal is mastering clarity.

We explored how search is evolving from traditional SEO into Answer Engine Optimisation and Generative Engine Optimisation. While those terms sound technical, the concept itself is actually very simple. Search engines and AI platforms reward businesses that communicate clearly and consistently.

The clearer your positioning becomes, the easier it is for Google, ChatGPT, Siri and AI search tools to understand who you help, what you specialise in and when your business should appear in search results.

That is incredibly important moving forward because positioning is no longer just branding. It now directly impacts discoverability.

If somebody asks ChatGPT:
“Who specialises in luxury Australian rail journeys?”
or
“Who is the best travel agent for the natural wonders of the world holidays?”

…the businesses with the clearest expertise signals are far more likely to appear.

That reality is changing modern marketing faster than most people realise.

The Most Strategic Travel Agents Are Focusing Their Energy Differently

One of the most reassuring conversations from the session centred around platform overwhelm because many business owners feel pressure to be everywhere at once. Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, blogs, newsletters and video content can quickly become exhausting. But one of the key lessons from the training was understanding that you do not need to master every platform.

You simply need to consistently show up where your ideal clients already spend time.

Each platform plays a different role. Instagram builds inspiration and personality. Facebook strengthens relationships. LinkedIn builds authority. YouTube improves search visibility. Email nurtures long-term trust.

Once travel agents understand this, marketing immediately feels more strategic and far less chaotic.

Some Travel Agents Are Building Visibility That Lasts for Years

One particularly interesting conversation focused on YouTube because many travel professionals still think of it purely as social media. But YouTube is really a search engine. A well positioned video answering a common client question can continue generating visibility for years.

Questions like:
“What is the best time to visit Japan?”
“Can you visit the Porsche factory in Germany?”
“How far in advance should I book flights to Ireland?”

…are no longer just content ideas. They are search opportunities.

Modern marketing is increasingly about becoming the trusted answer.

The Travel Agents Growing Stronger Businesses Are Thinking More Strategically

During the session, we also watched a small segment from a brilliant discussion between Seth Godin and Chase Jarvis around strategy, positioning and attracting better clients. One of the strongest takeaways from the conversation was the reminder that successful businesses are not built through constant activity. They are built through better strategic decisions.

That conversation connected perfectly with two books I recommend buying a hardcopy of: This Is Strategy and Purple Cow.

Both books reinforce the same core idea: standing out does not come from doing more. It comes from becoming clearer, more intentional and more meaningful to the right audience.

Clients Remember Travel Agents that Are Clearer, Not Louder

And honestly, that was the deeper transformation happening throughout this training.

These travel agents were not simply learning how to improve their profiles or write better bios. They were beginning to think differently about visibility, positioning, trust and modern marketing altogether.

Because the travel agents who thrive over the next five years will not necessarily be the loudest online. They will be the clearest.

Clear in who they help, clear in what they specialise in, clear in the experiences they create, and super clear in the value they bring.

What is the best marketing strategy for a travel agent?

The strongest marketing strategy is becoming known for something specific. The clearer you are about who you help and what you specialise in, the easier it becomes for clients to remember and choose you.

How can travel agents use AI for marketing?

AI tools like ChatGPT, and Claude can help create blogs, emails, destination guides and website copy faster and more strategically. Perplexity is best for fact-checking. The goal is not replacing personality. It is supporting consistency and visibility. Allowing you more time to do what you really love to do.
